NACIUS JOSEPH

(1939- )

Under the guidance of sculptor Gilbert Duperrier, Nacius Joseph ofPetit-Goave became a fine wood sculptorwithout equal. According to Ute Stebich in the book “Haitian Art:” “Rooted in voodoo, his art is marked by great authenticity and strength of conviction. His complicated, elegant structures embody the poetic aspect of his religion rather than its austere spiritual grandeur.” Biblical scenes, a guitar-playing La Sirene (goddess of the sea), men rowing boats and lovers embracing are among the subjects of this versatile artist.
