JEAN BAPTISTE JEAN JOSEPH
He was born in February, 1966. As a 19-year-old factory worker in the mid-1980s, he had a dream that someone was talking to him about Vodou flags. Without formal training or the help of a mentor, he made his first Vodou flag and sold in to the Musee d’Art Haitien in Port-au-Prince. That sale was the encouragement he needed to keep working. Variety in imagery, from mundane house cats to sacred figures like angels, is his specialty. His use of fine materials, including satin and velvet, sets him apart. He is in the top echelon of his medium.
