La Sirene et La Balesne

This museum-quality voodoo flag has everything going for it -- a tight matrix of sequins and beads, original artistry by one of the medium’s rising female stars, and a dynamic association of symbolism laid out in highly appealing colors. The name of the flag refers to La Sirene, the deity associated with the ocean and the safe passage of voyagers, the safety of swimmers, and the prosperity of fishermen. La Balesne is the whale that accompanies her, pictured here as also a boat. Playful fish in all colors are her other companions. The comb and mirror denote La Sirene’s coquettish nature. Compasses are included to guide her way and for her to help sailors lost at sea. Her powerful fish body, with nearly iridescent sequins in teal, deep mauve and silver, propels her through the stormiest seas. Fortilus, who is more known for religious and historical depictions of saints on her flags, has taken a step into the highest echelon of voodoo flag artists. 35” by 46”Sequins and beads sewn on satinArtist: Nadine Fortilus
