Famille Guede Mazaca
This masterpiece of the voodoo flag medium paying homage to the family of spirits governing death and the fate of souls is by one of its original pioneers. Clotaire Bazile popularized the collecting of voodoo flags by taking them out of their sanctuaries and putting them into the commercial marketplace. He saw the value in these beautiful sacred textiles as art objects worthy of the same kind of appraisal by scholars of cultural heritage within Haiti as appreciative foreigners. The measurement of this flag includes the fringe, which is added to attract the attention of the spirits. Three ties sewn on the flag’s side indicate its ceremonial use, as the flag is tied to a pole and held aloft to greet special guests. This flag is an exceptional example of Bazile’s impeccable artistry as a sewing technician with his tightly woven sea of sequins and beads and as a colorist with a strong aesthetic sense. Any true connoisseur would treasure this rare large contemporary flag made by Bazile.
