Damballah on Blue Cloth
This recent acquisition from Haiti introduces another artist to the expanding medium of Vodou flags. Menos happily blends symbolism in this fabulous flag. The palm tree, portrayed on the Haitian national flag, is inside the heart symbolizing Erzulie, the goddess of love, while the snake Damballah with two heads is underneath. Damballah and his partner Ayida Ouedo, a female, are portrayed with two heads. The drum in the other corner denotes the importance of music and this particular instrument in Vodou ceremonies, where dancing and singing are key components..
