Maman Brigitte
This female Haitian Vodou symbol is part of the Guede family of spirits who control the fate of one's soul upon death. Their importance relates to the concept of life eternal or perhaps damnation. Purple, the background cloth in satin, is the color associated with the Guede spirits who are celebrated around the time of our Halloween -- November 1 and 2. That's when Haitian families head to the cemeteries to pay tribute to their ancestors. The initials G.V. in the lower right corner are the artist's initials.
